Spain, covering about 80% of the Iberian Peninsula, features an average altitude of over 600 meters and is predominantly mountainous. The country offers a diverse range of environments, from the hot, dry Mediterranean zone in Catalonia to the wild Atlantic coast of Galicia, and includes near-desert regions, badlands, and the alpine landscapes of the Pyrenees. The Iberian Peninsula, including Andorra and Portugal, can be seen as a 'sub-continent' of Europe due to its varied geography.

Routes and Sections:
- Gran Recorridos: The Spanish TET is divided into four long-distance routes, known as Gran Recorridos (GRs), and several Special Sections featuring notable locations.
- GNR (Great Northern Route): Enters Spain from France near the Pyrenees in Catalonia, traverses the north of Spain, and enters Portugal from Galicia, passing through Andorra.
- Southern Routes: After leaving Portugal in the south, the TET moves through Andalusia and Murcia, then joins the GER (Great Eastern Route) heading north along the Mediterranean coast to re-enter France west of Andorra in the Val d'Aran.
- Special Sections: Includes Bardena Blanca in Navarre and the 'Frying Pan' region in Huelva province, which crosses into Portugal. Note that the Spanish TET manages this part of Portugal, so be aware of local regulations.

Author Tips & Tricks

- Weather Preparedness: Spain experiences extreme weather variations. Be ready for rapid changes in temperature and heavy rainfall, which can lead to challenging trail conditions with deep ruts, exposed boulders, and washouts.
- Regional Diversity: The TET in Spain highlights rural areas with sparse populations, offering a chance to experience natural beauty and local culture. The trails often pass through remote regions where you can enjoy unspoiled landscapes and minimal traffic.
- Local Hospitality: Rural Spain is known for its warm and generous locals. Engage with them to experience local culture, food, and wines. These interactions can be a memorable part of your journey.
- Special Sections: Explore regions like Bardena Blanca and the 'Frying Pan' to discover unique landscapes and local features.
